The mission of the Idyllwild School Music Program is to provide enriching musical experiences for students of all ages. There are countless benefits to having your child participate in creating music. The cognitive benefits include improved memory, reading skills, emotional awareness, and creativity. Children who perform in musical ensembles are able to participate in an enriching and rewarding experience which gives them a unique opportunity to explore their creativity while collaborating with peers. Idyllwild School offers the following music programs:
K-3 General Music: Students in Kindergarten through the third grade participate in weekly general music class where they participate in activities including singing, dance, and playing instruments. The goals of these classes are to help students listen and respond to music, express themselves creatively through music, gain an understanding of aesthetics, and to help them understand the cultural and historical context of musical works. Students participating in General Music classes will perform for Music Assemblies at 9am on Monday, May 20th.
4-5 Concert Band: Students in the 4th grade may elect to join Beginning Concert Band where they have the option of studying one of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone. Students who continue into the 5th grade may elect to join Intermediate Concert Band, where they may continue to develop their skills on their instrument or choose to progress to playing more challenging instruments including the tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, euphonium, or tuba. Students in Beginning and Intermediate Concert Band will perform at the Instrumental Music Concerts at 7pm on Tuesday, April 30th.
4-5 String Orchestra: Students in the 4th grade may elect to join Beginning String Orchestra where they have the option of studying violin, viola, or cello. Students who continue in the 5th grade may elect to join Intermediate String Orchestra, where they will continue to develop their skills on their instrument and learn more challenging repertoire. Students in Beginning and Intermediate String Orchestra will perform at the HUSD Orchestra Festival at Lowman Hall on the Idyllwild Arts Campus at 9am on Tuesday, March 26th. They will also perform at the String Orchestra & Chorus Concerts at 7pm on Friday, May 3rd.
Chorus: Students from third grade to eighth grade may elect to join Chorus, which meets after school from 2:45-4pm on Thursdays and Fridays. Students will learn about vocal technique, expand their singing range, and learn how to sing in harmony. Chorus will perform at the String Orchestra & Chorus Concerts at 7pm on Friday, May 3rd.
Guitar & Ukulele: Guitar and ukulele class meets after school from 2:45-4pm on Mondays. Students of all ages are welcome. Students will learn the techniques of playing plucked string instruments, how to read tab and standard notation, how to play melodies, and how to use chords to accompany voice. Guitar & Ukulele students will perform for Music Assemblies at 9am on Monday, April 29th.
Music Club: Music club is a chance for students to explore instruments or to play their chosen instrument in an ensemble with mixed instrumentation. Music Club meets after school from 2:45-4pm on Tuesdays. Students of all ages are welcome. Music Club will perform for Music Assemblies at 9am on Monday, April 29th.
